Building in Nyahururu

Nyahururu sits on the Laikipia and Nyandarua boundary at high altitude. It is cold and wet, and both of those change how a house should be built.

About 2,360mAbout two hours from Nanyuki.

What people are building here

  • Family homes and retirement houses
  • Rental units serving the town
  • Farm buildings and dairy units

What changes the design and the price in Nyahururu

Cold and damp

Insulation, a heat source and good ventilation all matter. Damp is a bigger enemy here than in Laikipia, so damp proof courses, floor build ups and roof ventilation deserve attention.

Slower concrete work

Cold, wet weather slows curing and can stall plaster and paint for days. Programmes here need honest allowance for it rather than optimistic dates that slip.

Approvals

Depending on which side of the boundary the plot sits, either Laikipia or Nyandarua County approves the plans. Confirm before drawings are prepared.

What materials cost here

Our base. Stone comes from the Laikipia and Meru quarries, sand mostly from the Ewaso Ng'iro and Timau side. Cement and steel come up from Nairobi or Nakuru, which is the main reason materials here sit a little above Nairobi yard prices.
